A helpful way to cope with things that are out of our control is to practise acceptance. Instead of seeing ourselves as victims or our situation as negative, acceptance makes us feel empowered about the things we can do.

Ask students to read the ReachOut.com article 'How acceptance can help you cope with things out of your control'.

Use an everyday example, such as going to a class they find difficult, to discuss how accepting something can help form a positive mindset. Explain that acceptance can be hard, but that it’s an important skill to learn.

Discuss the three options suggested in the article.

  1. Imagine what a role model or admired friend would do in the same situation.

  2. Write down your thoughts.

  3. Talk to others about how you’re feeling.
