Goal setting can be intimidating, especially if students are unsure of what their goals are. But it doesn’t have to be so. By creating simple and realistic ‘low-fi’ goals, students can recognise and appreciate the baby steps involved in achieving progress.

Instructions
5 minutes
Ask students to brainstorm what they know about goal setting, or the attributes of people who successfully achieve their goals, with a KWL worksheet. Alternatively, write three columns on the whiteboard/interactive whiteboard with KWL for a whole-class activity:
K = What I Know
W = What I Want to Know
L = What I Have Learnt
Students share and discuss in the K and W columns what they already know about goal setting and list any questions they may have. Answers may include SMART goals and examples of celebrities or athletes who have achieved great things.
Share the ReachOut case study Low-fi life goals for the whole class to read.
Students then reflect on what they’ve learnt about low-fi goals (baby steps, starting small) in the L column of the KWL. Prompts include:
Which achievements in Angie’s life is she proud of?
Why is recognising the small stuff important?
Exit ticket: Students share one low-fi goal they will work on over the next two weeks. Check back in with this goal after this time period for reflection.
